AngloINFO Singapore is the first site for AngloINFO in Asia and is owned and managed by Lynn Hesketh and Joanna Johnston. It launched on 1 September 2006 and is quickly establishing itself as the No.1 information resource in Singapore.
Singapore is the smallest country in Southeast Asia located on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, covering just under 700 Km2. After Monaco, Singapore is the second most densely populated country in the world with a population of over 4 million people. It is a compact city with one of the world’s most modern infrastructures, making it easy to get around and visit the city’s many shops, parks and tourist attractions. Tourism is one of the major industries with over 9 million visitors in 2005. This can be attributed to Singapore’s cultural diversity that reflects almost 200 years of colonial history and also to the fact that Singapore is one of the most visitor-friendly countries in the world.
Known as the Garden City and famous for the Raffles Hotel and the Singapore Sling cocktail, Singapore is also a huge expatriate community. Its multicultural heritage, a mixture of Malay, Chinese, Indian and European, has resulted in many colourful festivals and holidays being celebrated throughout the year, including the Chinese New Year, Vesak Day and Deepavali.
Lynn and Joanna met when they were both working for Gulf Air in Bahrain during the early 1980s. Joanna later married and moved to Singapore where she was involved in several different enterprises before starting a family. Lynn also married and her husband’s work brought them to Singapore. During the intervening years she also brought up two children and was involved in a number of projects, including a 2 year part time IT course, specialising in web design.
Lynn and her husband have a house in the South of France where they discovered AngloINFO Riviera, a real lifesaver for them, almost five years ago. When they saw that AngloINFO were offering franchise opportunities they recognised that Singapore would greatly benefit from its own AngloINFO. Joanna took very little persuasion and the rest is history.
Moving to Singapore is generally less of a culture shock than moving to most other Far Eastern countries but there is still a great need for comprehensive information and support. Whilst other websites cover some issues, they miss the focus, depth, integrity and vision of AngloINFO. Both Lynn and Joanna wish they had had an AngloINFO when they arrived and look forward to providing the AngloINFO service to their peers and to future generations of expatriates.
